Amalgamated Transit Union Endorses Lee Harris for Shelby County Mayor - Press Release
AMALGAMATED TRANSIT UNION, LOCAL 713 ENDORSES LEE HARRIS FOR COUNTY MAYOR
Memphis, TN – The Memphis chapter of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) has announced its official endorsement of Tennessee Senate Minority Leader Lee Harris for Shelby County’s next Mayor.
The ATU is the largest labor union representing transit and allied workers in the U.S. and Canada. The Memphis chapter of the ATU – Local 713 – represents the interests of nearly 500 workers.
On October 4, Harris – a tenured professor at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law and currently a State Senator representing Tennessee's 29th district – announced his entry into the race for Shelby County Mayor.
Harris is the only candidate in the Shelby County mayoral race to name transit as a major campaign issue– and has established his support of transit workers and transit priorities throughout his career in public service.
Thomas Davidson, Secretary of ATU Local 713, commented, “The Union has chosen to support Lee Harris in his bid for our next County Mayor because our success depends on productive relationships with and support from all levels of government, especially local government. Lee Harris supports our members, and in turn the 20,000 passengers who ride public transit in Memphis each day.”
Harris noted, “I am a firm believer in the need for an effective public transit system for all Shelby County residents. Public transit is an essential element in combating poverty and building strong communities. I am grateful for the support of ATU Local 713 – a group that continues to strive to achieve transit solutions for all Shelby County residents.”
