Sen. Lee Harris, joined by John Williams, Smart Local 4 Business Manager, and smart member Mike Thorne
Memphis, TN—SMART Local 4 has announced its endorsement of Tennessee Senate Minority Leader Lee Harris for Shelby County Mayor. The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) is one of the country’s most dynamic and diverse unions with 216,000 North American members. Its members are sheet metal workers, service technicians, bus operators, engineers, conductors, sign workers, welders, production employees and more.
John Williams, Business Manager of Local 4, commented, “We support Lee Harris because he’s the candidate talking about how to move this community forward and reduce poverty. We have an apprenticeship program that could move more young men and women into middle class jobs that help them take care of a family. Lee Harris understands the importance of apprenticeship and he supports it.”
Harris noted, “This union provides real training that helps you get a good paying job. They have ideas about grow the ranks of our citizenry who are qualified for good-paying jobs. This union doesn’t just talk the talk. They are taking action, right now. Programs, like their apprenticeship program, is one piece of the puzzle that we need, if we are going to be serious about remediating poverty in our county and expanding opportunity. The Sheet Metal workers in Memphis have a long history in this community, one of the longest of the professional trades. I am grateful for their support.”
The Harris Campaign welcomes discussion about this announcement and his campaign generally.
