MEMPHIS, TN/ WASHINGTON, DC - The Collective PAC, national progressive organization founded by Quentin and Stefanie Brown James to recruit, train and fund progressive African American candidates has announced its official endorsement of Senator Lee Harris for Shelby County Mayor.

This announcement comes on the heels of an election day of big victories for progressives in races up and down the ballot and across the country, and within a month of The Collective PAC-endorsed candidate Randall Woodfin’s recent election as the new mayor of Birmingham, Alabama. The Collective PAC has helped 19 candidates win primary and/or general elections at the local, state and federal level thus far, including U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, Mayor Randall Woodfin of Birmingham, AL, Mayor Chokwe Lumumba of Jackson, MS, Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver of NJ, Mayor Vi Lyles of Charlotte, NC and, just yesterday, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax in Virginia.

Of the announcement, Sen. Lee Harris said, “This is an important endorsement. It’s a sign that national progressive organizations are taking a closer look at Memphis and Shelby County. Our community has not received national attention since Harold Ford, Jr. ran for US Senate in 2006. The combined effort of national progressive organizations, like The Collective PAC, fueled victories around the country yesterday. If we can get some of these organizations to take a look at Memphis, we have a chance to flip Shelby County blue.” The Collective PAC Founder Quentin James said, "The elections taking place this year and in 2018 represent transformational opportunities for our nation and the black community.”

About State Senator Lee Harris

Lee Harris works hard and can work with almost anyone. In 2017, Harris passed more bills than any other Democratic legislator. He frequently worked across the aisle and, as a result, more than half of these bills were co-sponsored by Republicans. Prior to the 2014 election, Harris served on the Memphis City Council. Senator Harris is also a tenured full professor of law at the University of Memphis Law School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse and his law degree from Yale. Senator Harris is a proud product of our public schools. Senator Harris is married to Prof. Alena Allen. They have two children, Lee Allen Harris (12) and Claudia Harris (9), both of whom are public school students.
