Memphis, TN- United Campus Workers- Communications Workers of America, Tennessee’s Higher Education Union, has voted to endorse Tennessee Senate Minority Leader Lee Harris for Shelby County Mayor.

The UCW-CWA is the union for staff and faculty, graduate employees, and lecturers at public colleges and universities in Tennessee. They have over 1,800 members on 16 campuses across the state, including the University of Memphis, Southwest Community College, UT Health Science Center, and many more. Their mission is to advance and defend the interests of all Tennessee higher education staff and faculty, as well as promoting solidarity, democracy, and advancing social and economic justice in our workplace and in our communities.

Margaret Cook, Vice President of UCW-CWA Memphis Chapter, commented, “We’re thrilled to announce our support of Lee Harris for Shelby County Mayor.  Sen. Harris has a long history of sponsoring and passing legislation that represents the values of our membership, including non-discrimination in the workplace, expanded tuition free access to higher education, and a general commitment to place people over profit. He has consistently been a voice of reason in the debate over Governor Haslam’s disastrous privatization plan.”

Sen. Lee Harris noted, “Our higher education institutions are engines of prosperity. The UCW-CWA membership consists of hard-working, middle class Shelby County residents, who make sure that our kids succeed after high school. Their partnership is essential to ensuring that all of our college and graduate students have an opportunity to graduate from college and begin careers here in Shelby County. ”

The Harris Campaign welcomes discussion about this announcement and his campaign generally.

About State Senator Lee Harris

Lee Harris works hard and can work with anyone. In 2017, Harris passed more bills than any other Democratic legislators. He frequently worked across the aisle and, as a result, more than half of these bills were co-sponsored by Republicans. Prior to the 2014 election, Harris served on the Memphis City Council. Senator Harris is also a tenured full professor of law at the University of Memphis Law School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse and his law degree from Yale. Senator Harris is a proud product of our public schools. Senator Harris is married to Prof. Alena Allen.  They have two children, Lee Allen Harris (12) and Claudia Harris (9), both of whom are public school students.
